Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou (born March 29, 1943) is a Greek electronic musician and composer, known professionally as Vangelis. He first emerged as the keyboardist of beat combo The Forminx, which issued a string of 1964/65 singles on Decca and Pan-Vox. He then teamed up with members of rival band The Minis to form the symphonic/psych supergroup Aphrodite’s Child, which issued numerous singles and three popular albums between 1968 and 1972.
While the band were still active, he began cutting solo material, starting with his soundtrack for the 1970 flick Sex Power. All of his albums up through 1973 were issued under his modified full-name Vangelis Papathanassiou. Starting with the 1975 RCA release Heaven and Hell, all of his albums have simply bore the Vangelis moniker. Some of his most popular works include his mid-to-late-’70s sequence of electronic albums — including Albedo 0.39 (1976) and Spiral (1977) — and his soundtracks to the ’80s-era blockbusters Chariots of Fire (1981) and Blade Runner (1982).
