Zao was a French Zeuhl ensemble that was active during the 1970s and again at sporadic intervals during subsequent decades. They released five albums on Vertigo, Urus, and RCA between 1973 and 1977.

Members: François Faton Cahen (piano, keyboards), Yochk’o Seffer (saxophone, clarinet, flute, tarogato, voice, piano, 1972-76, 1986, 1994, 2004-present), Mauricia Platon (vocals, 1972-74), Jean-Yves Rigaud (violin, 1972-74), Joël Dugrenot (bass, vocals, 1972-75), Jean My Truong (drums, 1972-77, 1986, 1994), Gérard Prévost (bass, 1975-77, 2004-present), Didier Lockwood (violin, 1976-77), Manu Katché (drums, 1977), Hamid Belhocine (trombone, 1977), Francois Debricon (saxophone, flute, 1977) Débora Seffer (violin, 1986), Dominique Bertram (bass, 1986, 1994)


Zao was formed in 1971 by two ex-members of Magma: reedist Yochk’o Seffer and keyboardist François Faton Cahen.


Zao released their debut album, Z=7L, in 1973 on Vertigo.


Zao released their second album, Osiris, in 1974 on Disjuncta.


Zao released their third album, Shekina, in 1975 on RCA Victor.


Zao released their fourth album, Kawana, in 1976 on RCA Victor.


Zao released their fifth album, Typhareth, in 1976 on RCA Victor.


In 2004, Musea issued Live, a document of Zao’s December 5th, 1976, show at L’Ouest de la Grosne in Bresse Sur Grosne.
