Clarence Carter (born Jan. 14, 1936) is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Montgomery, Ala., who first recorded in the C&C Boys with fellow blind singer Calvin Scott, issuing multiple singles on Fairlane and Duke in the early 1960s. As a solo singer, Carter cut three 1966/67 singles on soul-press Fame, followed by four albums on Atlantic between 1968 and 1970, scoring hits with “Slip Away” and “Patches.” After his three-year marriage to singer Candi Staton, he released an album on Fame in 1973, followed by three albums on ABC between 1974 and 1976.
