Jean Carn

Jean Carn (born March 15, 1947) is an American soul singer from Columbus, Ga., who sang on three albums for the Black Jazz label during the early 1970s with then-husband Doug Carn.


Jean Carn was born Sarah Jean Perkins on March 15, 1947, in Columbus, Ga. As a child, she sang in her church choir and learned to play the piano, clarinet, and bassoon. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta in 1965 and earned a scholarship to Morris Brown College, where she studied musical theater and opera.

She was planning to continue her studies at New York’s Juilliard School of Music when she met jazz musician Doug Carn. The two married and moved to Los Angles, where she became a featured vocalist in his spiritual jazz combo. They released three albums under his name on the Black Jazz label between 1971 and 1973.
