Blow Out

Blow Out was a Norwegian jazz-rock band that released a 1977 self-titled album on Compendium.

Members: Håkon Graf (keyboards), Jon Eberson (guitars), Sveinung Hovensjø (bass), Jon Christensen (drums), Miki N’Doye (percussion)

Background

Blow Out formed in 1977 in Oslo when keyboardist Håkon Graf initiated a project with bassist Sveinung Hovensjø, drummer Jon Christensen, and guitarist Jon Eberson.

Graf joined Ruphus in 1972 and played on the first three albums through the 1976 release Let Your Light Shine. He entered the final Moose Loose lineup for the 1976 album Transition. Eberson became a professional musician at eighteen and formed Moose Loose in 1973 with Hovensjø, keyboardist Brynjulf Blix, and drummer Pål Thowsen. Hovensjø made his recording debut with Earl Wilson in 1970 and joined the Terje Rypdal band in 1973. By the mid-seventies, Christensen worked with Jan Garbarek and Rypdal on ECM recordings.

The four musicians frequented Club 7 in 1975–76, where Graf recalls informal groups centered on African folk music and improvisation. Gambian percussionist Miki N’Doye came to Oslo in 1976 and formed E’Olen. Graf and Eberson supplied the compositions for the Blow Out project. Graf and Compendium cofounder Frode Holm produced the April 1977 sessions at Roger Arnhoff Studio in Oslo. Egil Eide engineered the recordings with N’Doye on guest percussion.
