Goebbels & Harth

Goebbels & Harth was the avant-garde German duo of saxophonists Heiner Goebbels and Alfred Harth. They released two albums while members of Sogenanntes Linksradikales Blasorchester, an experimental big band.

Their 1981 split record, Der durchdrungene Mensch / Indianer für morgen, contains “Berlin, Kudamm 12. 4. 81,” a riotous piece included on the Recommended Records Sampler, a 1982 multi-artist RēR compilation. They formed one-half of Cassiber, a cabaret/free-music quartet with singer Christoph Anders and RēR’s founder, Henry Cow/Art Bears drummer Chris Cutler. Between 1982 and 1990, Cassiber made four albums.

Goebbels and Harth continued their duo activities with Zeit wird knapp, a collection of reinvented Bertolt Brecht numbers with Cow/Slapp Happy singer Dagmar Krause. Their 1984 opera, Frankfurt – Peking, became the basis for 革命京劇 Ver 1.28 [Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28], a 1996 plunderphonics album by Tokyo turntablists Ground Zero.

Members: Heiner Goebbels (piano, synthesizer, organ, harpsichord, harmonium, accordion, soprano saxophone, shawm, cello, guitar, bouzouki, electric bass, percussion, [Chinese] violin, rhythm machine), Alfred Harth (tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, trombone, trumpet, reeds, vocals, percussion)

Heiner Goebbels and Alfred Harth formed their musical partnership in 1975 in Frankfurt. In 1976, they assembled twenty horn players in Sogenanntes Linksradikales Blasorchester (So-called Radical Left Wind Band).
