The Moments

The Moments were an American soul trio from Washington, D.C., formed in 1965. Signed to Sylvia Robinson‘s All Platinum-subsidiary Stang Records, the group released 10 albums on the label between 1969 and 1978. In 1979, they dropped the Moments moniker and issued subsequent albums under their collective surnames: Ray, Goodman & Brown.

Members: John Morgan (1965-70), Mark Greene (1965-69), Eric Olfus Sr. (1965-69), Richard Gross (1965-69), Al Goodman (1969-78), William “Billy” Brown (1969-78), Johnny Moore (1970), Harry Ray (1970-78)

The Moments were formed in 1965 Washington D.C. by singers Eric Olfus Sr., Richard Gross (sometimes credited as “Richard Horsley”), and John Morgan. That year, they issued their first single, “‘Baby’ I Want You” (b/w “Pray For Me”), on one-press Hog, a label set up by writer Larry Mizell and his arranger brother Fonce Mizell. It was the first production by the pair, who later wrote and produced records for Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Johnny Hammond, The Jacksons, A Taste of Honey, and Sun.

After that single, incoming vocalist Mark Greene turned The Moments into a quartet. They signed to Stang Records, established in 1968 by veteran recording artist Sylvia Robinson and her husband Joe. The group’s first single for the label was the charting Robinson-penned ballad “Not On the Outside” (R&B #13, Pop #57), backed with the mid-tempo piano boogie “Understanding.” Later that year, Greene left the group along with founders Olfus and Gross.

The Moments reemerged as a trio with Morgan and incoming vocalists Al Goodman and William “Billy” Brown (former of The Broadways). This lineup issued six Stang singles in 1969, including “Sunday”, (R&B #13, Pop #90), “I Do” (R&B #10, Pop #62), “I’m So Lost” (R&B #43), and “Lovely Way She Loves” (R&B #14). That same year, they released their debut album, Not on the Outside, But on the Inside, Strong!
