Background
Flied Egg formed in September 1971 when guitarist-keyboardist Shigeru Narumo and drummer-singer Hiro Tsunoda added bassist Masayoshi Takanaka to Strawberry Path and adopted a new name.
Narumo, born in Tokyo in 1947, started guitar in middle school and played in the Fingers, which won the television contest Kachinuki Eleki Gassen while he attended Keio University. Tsunoda, born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1949, started drums in middle school and played with the Sadao Watanabe Quartet, the Jacks, and Food Brain. Takanaka, born in Tokyo in 1953, played bass in July 1971 with Hiro Yanagida Group behind Nobuyasu Okabayashi at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall.
Narumo recruited Tsunoda after hearing him with the Jacks at Haiyuza in Roppongi, and they formed Gypsy Eyes in 1970 with singer-bassist George Yanagi. The group played university festivals and Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall. Yanagi joined the Golden Cups in September 1970, and Narumo and Tsunoda continued as Strawberry Path. Masaharu Honjo produced the June 1971 Strawberry Path album When the Raven Has Come to the Earth.
Narumo and Tsunoda brought Takanaka into Strawberry Path as a support bassist for Hakone Aphrodite in August 1971. One month after the festival, the pair made him a permanent member and renamed the trio Flied Egg. Narumo kept the teenage guitarist on bass in the new band and taught him music theory and guitar technique. Takanaka also began studio sessions on bass through Narumo. Honjo and Narumo produced the first Flied Egg album across 1971–72 at Victor Studio. Flied Egg released “Someday” in February 1972 (b/w “Rolling Down the Broadway”), two months ahead of Dr. Siegel’s Fried Egg Shooting Machine.
