Food Brain was a Japanese jam-rock band that released the 1970 Polydor album Social Gathering.

Background

Food Brain formed in late April 1970 when guitarist Shinki Chen and keyboardist Hiro Yanagida teamed with bassist Masayoshi Kabe and drummer Hiro Tsunoda. Chen came from Power House, a Yokohama blues-rock band with a 1969 Toshiba/Express album. Yanagida originated in the Floral, which evolved into proto-supergroup Apryl Fool for a 1969 album on Nippon Columbia. Kabe played bass and guitar in the Golden Cups. Tsunoda joined the Jacks in late 1968 and played on the second album Jacks no Kiseki.

Early in 1970, Chen joined Yanagida, Tsunoda, and bassist Kei Ishikawa for music to the Kōji Wakamatsu film Shinjuku Mad. The film credits named the four musicians individually; the formal Food Brain lineup used Kabe on bass. Chen and Yanagida began plans for a new band near the end of April, and the quartet adopted the Food Brain name.

Food Brain first appeared on May 10 at the Third Japan Rock Festival at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall in Tokyo. Chen described Food Brain as a loose unit for recordings and concerts while each member retained outside affiliations. Chen met Polydor producer Ikuzo Orita near the end of 1969 after Panta gave Orita the telephone number for Chen. The quartet recorded Social Gathering in July at Victor Studio in Tokyo for Polydor.
