Cargoe formed in 1968 in Tulsa, Okla. Their two main songwriters were keyboardist Bill Phillips and guitarist Tommy Richard. Both sang, along with the rhythm section of bassist Max Wisley and drummer Tim Benton. In 1970, they issued a single on one-press Beautiful: the Phillips number “Wondering,” backed with Richard’s “Feel Allright.”

Cargoe took base in Memphis, where they signed with Ardent, a subsidiary of Stax. They recorded their debut album in January–February 1972 with producer Terry Manning.
