Allen Kwela (Sept. 11, 1939 – July 1, 2003) was a South African jazz guitarist who released three albums during the 1970s. His first, Allen’s Soul Bag, was recorded with an eponymous octet and released on the Atlantic City label. Subsequent recordings appeared on the Soweto and Ring imprints. He later explored his namesake roots music on The Broken Strings of Allen Kwela, which was released in 1998 to great fanfare.
