Raw Power is a 1973 album by The Stooges, credited here with frontman Iggy Pop before the band name. Produced by David Bowie, the release marked the band’s only studio recording to feature guitarist James Williamson.
While the album’s mid-tempo blues rock and sludgy vibe was in step with the era’s hard rock trends, the thinned-out buzz of the guitar — courtesy of Bowie’s rushed production — gave the songs an exceedingly trebly sound that alienated many listeners. Nonetheless, the sound would gain subterranean traction over the next half-decade.
Songwise, the soaring chords and phased vibe of “Search and Destroy” is most immediate, while the stop/start riff of the title-track, the whispery sighs and chordal sizzle of “Penetration,” and the down-pace, minor-key blues of “I Need Somebody” add contrast to the set.
