Background

Rocky’s Filj formed in Parma at the start of the 1970s when bassist Franz Dondi teamed with keyboardist Maurizio Mori, guitarist Giacomo Fava, drummer Rubino Colasante, and singer–woodwind player Roberto “Rocky” Rossi.

Dondi learned bass through Clan G, a student music circle at Parma’s Felice Corini school under technology teacher Giuseppe Gualazzini. I Moschettieri later brought Dondi, Mori, and Fava into the same Parma beat lineup. The quintet cut “Un’anima perduta” (b/w “Quando il tempo dell’amore”) and opened Italian dates for the Rolling Stones on their 1967 tour. Rossi came from Vicenza.

As Roky’s Fily, they cut the 1971 Cobra single “Ingrid” (b/w “Lo spettro”). The original lineup ended midyear when Dondi and Mori left for Acqua Fragile. By 1972, Rocky’s Filj comprised singer–woodwind player Rossi, guitarist–flutist Roby Grablovitz, bassist–trombonist Luigi Ventura, and drummer–double bassist Colasante. Rocky’s Filj played Pop Villa Pamphili in Rome on May 27, 1972, at Villa Doria Pamphilj.

The quartet appeared at Rome’s Festival d’Avanguardia e Nuove Tendenze in June, where Rocky’s Filj performed “Quinta strada contemporaneo” for the festival film. The group also toured Italy with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Odissea. Rocky’s Filj secured a Ricordi contract through the Banco dates. Producer Sandro Colombini brought the quartet into Ricordi Studios for July 1973 sessions.
