Mayfly -

Mayfly was a Dutch folk-rock band that released six singles and a 1973 self-titled album on Ariola.

Background

Mayfly formed by 1969 in Bergen, North Holland, when Gustaaf Verburg and Ide Min developed the local group Guruperide with their brothers Onno Verburg and Maarten Min. Flutist Rinus Groeneveld, who grew up in Bergen, first performed in 1967 with Guruperide. Mayfly also included bassist-cellist Huub Nijhuis and pianist-violinist Arie de Geus. Ide Min set lyrics to music by Gustaaf Verburg for a series of demos.

In 1970, producer Martin Duiser received a demo of “Blue Sofa.” Mayfly signed with Ariola-Eurodisc Benelux in 1972 as one of the Dutch groups in the developing local roster. Ariola issued “Blue Sofa” (b/w “Orphan Girl”) in late 1972 as the debut Mayfly single, followed in March 1973 with “Skew Eyed Jimmy” (b/w “Second Hand Dream”). Mayfly entered a three-week studio session with Duiser in 1973 for the self-titled Ariola debut.
