Gift was a German hard-rock band behind the 1972 Telefunken album Gift and the 1974 NOVA title Blue Apple.

Members: Rainer Baur (lead guitar), Uwe Patzke (bass, vocals), Hermann “Mandy” Lange (drums, percussion), Helmut Treichel (lead vocals, 1969-73), Nick Woodland (lead guitar, vocals, 1969-72), Dieter Atterer (guitar, vocals, 1973), Dieter Frei (organ, piano, vocals, 1973)

Background

Gift developed from the Augsburg group Phallus Dei, formed in 1969 with singer Helmuth Treichel, bassist Uwe Patzke, drummer Hermann “Mandy” Lange, guitarist Rainer Baur, and guitarist Nick Woodland. Treichel and Baur played concurrently in Deeper Blue, which remained active through a June 1970 Pop-Festival at the Plaza in Königsbrunn.

Phallus Dei (the title of the 1969 debut Amon Duul II album) played frequent local concerts and won a succession of band contests around Augsburg. Friedewald Strunz recommended the group to Munich producer Otto B. Hartmann, who arranged a production contract with Telefunken/Decca. The contract gave the musicians three months to write and record an album. They group rented a house in Friedberg for intensive rehearsals. Woodland left prior to the debut sessions and joined Munich group Subject ESQ.
