Tommie Young is an American soul singer from Dallas who released the 1973 album Do You Still Feel the Same Way.

Background

Tommie Young was born on January 14, 1949, in Dallas, Texas. Her father, Bishop T. L. Young, pastored Emanuel Temple Church of God in Christ in West Dallas. Young first sang in his church at age five and worked church engagements during adolescence.

By 1972, Young moved into secular club work in downtown Dallas, where Bobby Patterson heard her at the Flying Fox Club. Patterson arrived from Shreveport after Jetstar Records folded and worked for Stan Lewis at Jewel Record Inc. Patterson also wrote with recording engineer Jerry Strickland at Sound City Studio. In 1972, Lewis gave Patterson and Strickland half interest and creative control in Soul Power.

Two weeks after the Flying Fox Club date, Patterson returned with a track for Roosevelt Jamison’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” Soul Power released “Take Time to Know Him” / “Hit and Run Lover” in July 1972. Patterson and Strickland prepared the next Young single, “Everybody’s Got a Little Devil in Their Soul” / “Do You Still Feel the Same Way.” In March 1973, Young reached No. 28 on the national R&B chart with “Do You Still Feel the Same Way.” Young recorded six Soul Power singles and one album at Sound City Studio at 3316 Line Avenue in Shreveport.

Do You Still Feel the Same Way

Tommie Young released her singular album, Do You Still Feel the Same Way, in May 1973 on Soul Power.

The album presents slow-drag confessionals and mid-tempo soul sides, performed by Young with producer-arranger Bobby Patterson and backing vocalist Dorothy Moore. Patterson and Jerry Strickland wrote ten titles; Roosevelt Jamison wrote “That’s How Strong My Love Is.”

“Do You Still Feel the Same Way” lingers on raised lead phrases, gospel-cut bends, and a long-held title refrain. “That’s How Strong My Love Is” slows into a pledge cadence with close vocal control and sustained line endings. “Hit and Run Lover” saunters through a medium backbeat and clipped brass replies. “You Can’t Have Your Cake (and Eat It Too)” snaps through side-eyed phrasing and a harder rhythmic edge. “Everybody’s Got a Little Devil in Their Soul” leans into a tougher chant cadence and compact chorus answers.

Sessions occurred at Sound City Recording in Shreveport with Patterson producing and George Clinton and Jerry Strickland engineering.

Soul Power issued “Everybody’s Got a Little Devil in Their Soul” in December 1972, backed with “Do You Still Feel the Same Way.” The B-side reached No. 28 on Billboard R&B in March 1973. “She Don’t Have to See You (To See Through You)” became a June 1973 single, backed with “That’s All a Part of Loving Him,” and reached No. 69 on Billboard R&B in July 1973.
