Act 1 -

Act 1 was an American soul group from Detroit that released four singles and a 1974 self-titled album on Spring Records. They were led and produced by Raeford Gerald, who cut several solo singles as Ray Godfrey.

Background

Act 1 began in Detroit when writer-producer Raeford Gerald assembled a studio vocal group with Roger Terry, Reggie Ross, and George Barker. Gerald had already cut solo singles under the name Ray Godfrey and led Act 1 at Spring Records as writer and producer.

Act 1 made its Spring debut in January 1973 with “Friends or Lovers” (b/w “I Never Had a Love Like Yours”), a Gerald-written single with production by Gerald. The group followed in July with “It Takes Both of Us” (b/w “A Whole Lot of Love Makin’”), which credited Dock Price Jr., Gerald, and Terry as writers. Act 1 added “Goodbye Love (We’re Through)” (b/w “Tom the Peeper”) later in 1973 and “Party Hardy People” (b/w “Do You Feel It”) before the 1974 self-titled LP on Spring Records.

Act 1 released their self-titled debut album in 1974 on Spring.

The album pairs uptempo group-voiced sides with slow close-harmony ballads under arrangements by Raeford Gerald, Andrew Smith, Tony Camillo, Doug Nordli, and Jerry McCants.

Gerald wrote or co-wrote six songs and produced the LP. “Party Hardy People” opens the LP with an uptempo arrangement. “Friends or Lovers” uses handclaps and close-harmony placement inside a slow ballad frame.

“Party Hardy People” struts through a clipped party chant, bright vocal replies, and a firm bassline. “I Don’t Want to Know What You Do to Me” saunters in a mid-tempo pocket with smooth lead placement. “Still Water” lingers in lush ballad treatment, where close harmonies sit beside gull effects. “Friends or Lovers” floats as a polished ballad with a tight vocal blend. “You Didn’t Love Me Anyhow” sways through dramatic phrasing and arranged group support. “It’s The Same Old Story” works as a soft-edged floater with a measured cadence. “Tom the Peeper” snaps into uptempo dancefloor form with a concise backbeat.

Gerald produced Act 1 and arranged five tracks. Smith arranged six tracks, while Camillo, Nordli, and McCants received additional arranging credits.

Act 1 uses a black cover with oversized title lettering filled by pink, orange, blue, and white speckled patterns.

Mercury issued “Tom the Peeper” as an April 1974 UK single (b/w “Goodbye Love (We’re Through)”), which reached No. 40 on the UK Singles Chart. Spring lifted “Party Hardy People” as a November 1974 single (b/w “Do You Feel It”).
