Background

Solar Plexus formed in 1970 in Huddinge when pianist and flutist Carl-Axel Dominique assembled Bäska Droppar with organist and singer Monica Dominique, guitarist and bassist Georg “Jojje” Wadenius, and drummer Tommy “Slim” Borgudd.

The Dominique couple met as students at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and married in 1961. Carl-Axel made his solo concert debut in 1965 with the Concord Sonata by Charles Ives and composed the 1965–66 revue musical Utsålt. Monica wrote arrangements for Utsålt, sang with Gals & Pals between 1966 and 1969, and wrote her first big-band arrangements in 1966 for the Swedish Radio Jazz Group at the request of Monica Zetterlund.

Wadenius and Borgudd entered Bäska Droppar from Made in Sweden, the jazz-rock trio they formed in 1968 with bassist Bo Häggström after the breakup of Lea Riders Group. Made in Sweden released Made in Sweden (with Love) and Snakes in a Hole, then recorded a 1970 live album at Stockholm jazz club Gyllene Cirkeln.

Bäska Droppar played Power House in Örebro on May 22, 1971, with the four founders in the documented lineup. The quartet recorded music composed by Carl-Axel Dominique in spring 1971 at Radiohusets Studio 5 in Stockholm for the Beppe Wolgers adaptation Gullivers resor. Bäska Droppar appeared on the resulting double LP for SR Records. The group adopted the Solar Plexus name after the Gullivers resor project.

Solar Plexus recorded “Concerto Grosso för popgrupp och symfoniorkester” on Oct. 1, 1971, at Borgen in Norrköping with Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under conductor Everett Lee. Singer Tommy Körberg contributed the lead vocal on debut track “Som ett klarblått klot.” Solar Plexus completed the remaining debut material from October through December at EMI Studios in Stockholm for the self-titled double album on Odeon.
