Quasar

Quasar was an Australian avant-rock combo that released the 1979–81 Custom albums Nebular Trajectory and Man Coda.

Members: Len Henderson (guitar), Barry Tiplady (bass), Trevor Tiplady (drums)

Background

Quasar formed in Brisbane in 1974 when guitarist Len Henderson teamed with bassist Barry Tiplady, drummer Trevor Tiplady, keyboardist Garry Smith, and trumpeter Colin Timms, an attendee of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

Quasar supported Frank Zappa at Festival Hall on Jan. 26, 1976, and appeared on 4ZZZ’s first two Joint Effort bills on Feb. 20–21 in Brisbane. The five-piece also played two dates that year at The Basement in Sydney. Quasar relocated to Melbourne for an extended period while Timms remained in Brisbane to continue studies at QCM. The Melbourne lineup visited Adelaide for university dates and appearances at Tivoli Hotel and Creole Room. Quasar returned to Brisbane and reunited with Timms, while Henderson and the Tiplady brothers continued as the performing core when Smith left the group.

Business student Terry Humphries booked Quasar twice at Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education in Lismore and arranged a Brisbane demo session at Bruce Windows studio for a young singer-songwriter. Humphries learned that Quasar wanted to record an album and secured an Australia Council grant to finance sessions for the Australian Creative Recording debut Nebular Trajectory.
