Miroslav Vitous

Miroslav Vitous (born Dec. 6 1947) is a Czech jazz-rock bassist who has been internationally active for more than five decades. After moving stateside on a musical scholarship, he was recruited by Miles Davis for a round of 1967 live dates. Early backing credits include late-’60s albums by Roy Ayers, Chic Corea, and Herbie Man. In 1970, Vitous cut his first two headlining albums and co-founded Weather Report. After three albums with the group, he left in 1973 to work with Flora Purim, Larry Coryell, and Terje Rypdal. In 1976, Vitous resumed his solo career with the Warner release Magical Shepherd. He rounded the decade with credits behind Alphonse Mouzon, Lenny White, and Fumio Karashima.
