Klaus Schulze

Klaus Schulze is a German keyboardist, percussionist, and producer who played in the initial lineups of Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel between 1969 and 1971. In 1972, he debuted as a solo artist with the album Irrlicht on Ohr. Twelve further albums appeared between 1973 and 1980, mostly on Brain.


Klaus Schulze was born on August 4, 1947, in Berlin, Germany. In 1969, he joined Tangerine Dream, the experimental project headed by keyboardist Edgar Froese. Schulze, credited as Claus Schultze, played drums and “noises” on their 1970 debut album Electronic Meditation. Soon after its release, he left the band to co-found Ash Ra Tempel with guitarist Manuel Göttsching and bassist Hartmut Enke. Schulze played drums, percussion, and electronics on their 1971 eponymous debut album. Immediately afterwards, he departed for a solo career.
