Background

Debra Renee Laws was born September 10, 1956, in Houston, Texas, the seventh of eight children of Hubert Laws Sr. and Miola Luverta Donahue Laws. Miola Laws played piano and directed a church choir, whose rehearsals brought singers into the family home. Older siblings included flutist Hubert Laws, singer Eloise Laws, and saxophonist Ronnie Laws.

Laws entered Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, at age sixteen for the September–October 1972 sessions for Morning Star by Hubert Laws, where she joined Eloise Laws, Lani Groves, and Tasha Thomas among the session singers. She returned to recording work in 1977 on Friends and Strangers by Ronnie Laws and Funk in a Mason Jar by Harvey Mason.

Laws joined Eloise Laws on background vocals for the 1978 Aquarian Dream album Fantasy. She sang the female solo parts on the Hubert Laws album Land of Passion, which also featured Eloise, Johnny, and Blanche Laws among the singers.

Laws and Spirit Productions entered a recording agreement with Elektra/Asylum Records in 1979 for master recordings of her performances.
