Canamii were a South African symphonic/jazz-rock studio project assembled by two local music-industry insiders, keyboardist/composer Phillip Nel and vocalist/lyricist Claire Whittaker, both of whom worked for the Johannesburg branch of EMI. The nameplate is an altered portmanteau of their respective zodiac sings — Nel being a Cancer and Whittaker a Gemini. The latter roped in her guitarist brother-in-law, Paul Woodley, to complete the project. Additional instrumentation on the project’s singular album, Concept, was supplied by select studio musicians.

Members: Phillip Nel (keyboards, composition, production), Claire Whittaker (vocals, lyrics), Paul Woodley (guitar)
